Is coming for therapy a strength or a weakness?
Often people who see a therapist have been suffering for
some time, have considered therapy, but have postponed this
decision because they felt ashamed that they need help. Beginning
therapy is not a weakness, but a courageous, positive step
toward changing repetitive unfulfilling behaviors into a
life with more gratification in work, relationships, and
play.

What is Group Therapy and how is it different from Individual
Psychotherapy?
The primary focus of group therapy is interpersonal and interactional.
We focus on the nature of the interactions and the how and
why of each person's reaction. The focus is on the group
and between members, not between members and the therapist.

What is your theoretical orientation?
Although the providers at Enrichment Counseling and Assessment have training
in psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, humanistic, and family systems orientations,
we are careful to focus on the individual seeking help rather than focusing on
any one theory. We design the course of treatment to suit the unique person in
front of us.

When does a child need therapy?
Contrary to the wishful myth we have often heard, children
are not more adaptable and less affected by problems than
adults. The opposite is true -- children have fewer coping
skills and less control over themselves or their environment.
Child therapists can help evaluate if therapy is necessary.

Therapy Information »
When school personnel express concern about a child, it generally means that
they are observing behaviors that differ in some way from that of other same-age
children. Problems in school are often observed in impaired learning, social-emotional
conflicts or defiance with peers and adults, or these problems in combination.
What insurance plans do you accept?
Dr.
Marilyn Powell » is an in-network provider with
MultiPlan and BHS. Please call to schedule with Dr. Powell
if you are interested in using either of these plans. If you
have other insurance plans, then you may have access to out-of-network
benefits. Any of our providers can discuss accessing your mental
health benefits if you choose to do so.
Why should I pay for my services instead of using my insurance?
Some
of the reasons one might choose to pay for their services
directly rather than using their insurance include the following:
you want privacy; you want to choose your own therapist;
you want to choose the type and length of treatment; you
don’t want a managed care employee
making judgments about you; you don’t want to be
labeled ‘sick;’ you do not want your child
to have a diagnosis that could follow them for years to
come. Please read our brochure to learn more about paying
for your own therapy or assessment services.

What if I need medication?
If you are on medication, you may wish to continue to be
supervised on your medication with your physician. If you
are not currently taking medication, then this is a decision
you can consider with a therapist. Most often, when people
take medication for emotional problems, they do better if
they also seek psychotherapy. If a person has a therapist,
the therapist can be helpful in making the decision to try
medication and may recommend a specific doctor or assist
with the referral to a medical doctor.
Who hires a Coach?
People hire a coach when they are reevaluating choices they
have made in their life, making a career transition, struggling
with the demands of life, or wanting to improve their relationships
with family, friends, or co-workers. Occasionally,
they simply are feeling ready for a personal or professional
breakthrough or drastic change. They come from various
backgrounds and for various reasons.
